Yahoo! Europe Announces Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year End 2000 Revenue and Traffic Figures

London, Jan. 10, 2001.Yahoo! Europe, which provides communications, commerce and media services through eight local Yahoo! sites, today announced revenue and traffic figures for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2000 and its fiscal year end 2000 highlights.

The figures were released with today's announcement of financial results for Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO), which reported net revenues totalling $310,873,000 for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2000, a 53 percent increase from net revenues of $203,148,000 for the fourth quarter of 1999. Yahoo! Inc.'s non-U.S. operations, not including Yahoo! Japan, represented 16 percent of total consolidated revenues during the fourth quarter. Yahoo! Inc.'s net revenues for fiscal 2000 were $1,110,178,000, compared to net revenues of $591,786,000 in fiscal 1999, an increase of 88 percent.

Yahoo! Europe Q4 Highlights

  • Yahoo! Europe reported net revenues for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2000 of $32,998,000 (38,462,000 Euros), up from $17,691,000 (16,853,000 Euros, representing a 128 percent increase) in the same period of 1999.
  • Yahoo! Europe's traffic grew to more than 1.4 billion page views during the month of December 2000 on the Yahoo! Europe network.
  • 31 million unique users throughout all of Western Europe visited the Yahoo! network during the month of December 2000.
  • Corporate Yahoo!™ introduced to the European enterprise market.
  • Commerce platform expanded with introduction of Yahoo! Shopping in Italy.
Fiscal Year End 2000 Highlights

  • Yahoo! Europe reported net revenues for fiscal year end 2000 of $113,602,000 (123,291,000 Euros), up from $42,712,000 (40,066,000 Euros, representing a 208 percent increase) in 1999.
  • Page views more than doubled to 1.4 billion (Dec 1999: 550 million).
  • Unique users almost doubled to 31 million (Dec 1999: 18 million).
  • Over 160 new products and services added to the Yahoo! Europe network.
  • Rich media audio and video content integrated into each local site.
  • Yahoo! Mobile services launched across Europe.

Audience Growth and Usage

During the fourth quarter of 2000, Yahoo! Europe was ranked in the top three sites in home reach in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain and Germany1. Page views, for the month of December, grew to 1.4 billion, an increase of 155 percent compared to the same period last year. In December 2000, 31 million unique users throughout all of Western Europe visited the Yahoo! Network, almost double the users recorded in the fourth quarter of 1999.

Mobile Services & Internet Access

During the quarter, Yahoo! Europe signed an agreement with Packard Bell, the Consumer Division of NEC Computers International and leader in the European home PC market, to deliver the Yahoo! easy Internet experience through one-touch access on Packard Bell PCs. Over one million Packard Bell PCs will feature integrated functionality and customised Internet services from Yahoo!. The PCs will be available in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

As part of the Yahoo! Everywhere initiative, Yahoo! Minitel will be launched in France, which makes Yahoo! Mail available to users of Minitel terminals. Reaching 15 million home and office users, Minitel remains the most popular device for accessing online services in France.

The first Yahoo! Everywhere agreement was signed in Turkey with SuperOnline, Turkey's largest Internet Service Provider. Under the terms of the agreement, SuperOnline users will be able to access Yahoo! personal information management content in Turkish via a Yahoo! branded module on SuperOnline's homepage, which will also contain an English language website directory and search facility with links to Yahoo.com.

Yahoo! Europe further expanded the range of mobile services available through its local Yahoo! Mobile sites. M-commerce was introduced in Spain with the launch of Yahoo! Auctions, along with Lottery. Yahoo! Alerts, delivering Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Sport and Yahoo! Weather updates were added, along with a mobile site of the week service, to the German mobile portfolio. Horoscopes were added in the UK & Ireland, Germany, France & Italy.

Enabling Commerce Transactions

Yahoo! Shopping was launched in Italy in the weeks preceding the Holiday shopping season, where merchants include La Rinascente, Mediaworld, Primestore.it, Best of Italy, Masterpiece.com and Peck.it. In the UK & Ireland, a Holiday Gift Centre for last minute shopping enhanced the site and a dedicated Yahoo! Shopping bricks and mortar shop was opened in London for a six week period to introduce and educate UK users to the on-line shopping experience. This was supported by an integrated online and offline marketing campaign, encompassing buzz events, radio, print and viral e-mail campaigns, to increase consumer awareness of Yahoo! Shopping. New shopping merchants on the UK site also included Leaping Salmon, Tesco Gifts and Thorntons. The Yahoo! Germany Holiday shopping campaign encompassed a series of TV adverts, buzz events in all the major cities across Germany, and an innovative 3D Santa Claus advertisement which occupied the entire frontage of the SAS Radisson Hotel in Hamburg. More than 10 news merchants were added to Yahoo! Germany including Buecher.de, Conley's, Käfers and My Paradise.

Rich Media Services

Yahoo! Europe's network of sites continued to benefit from the integration of rich media and streaming audio and video across its local properties. In Germany, Yahoo! FM was introduced to the German site, providing 24-hour audio broadcast of popular music, current affairs and Internet news, including the latest information on Yahoo! products and services. In an advertising first for Germany, Yahoo! also hosted audio and video rich media banners for Renault. In Spain, a weekly video Internet soap opera has been added to the entertainment site, in association with Boca Interactiva. Audio streaming from Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal Football club was added to the UK & Ireland sports site, along with the Nokia Night of the Proms 2000 to the UK entertainment site. In France, audio streaming from Sport O'FM, enhanced the sports offering.

Business and Enterprise Services

During the quarter, Corporate Yahoo!™ (http://corporate.europe.yahoo.com), a customised enterprise information portal based on the widely used My Yahoo! interface, was introduced to the European enterprise market. Corporate Yahoo!™ enables companies to integrate proprietary corporate content and applications with Yahoo!'s personalised Internet content and services behind existing firewalls. An agreement was signed with Bayer AG, to use the Corporate Yahoo! Solution across its European operations, beginning in the first quarter of 2001.

In addition, in Sweden, My Yahoo! for Physicians, an extranet portal using the Corporate Yahoo! platform, was launched with the pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme.

Communications and Media

In Entertainment, Yahoo! Europe was the exclusive chat provider for MTVi Europe, the online division of MTV Networks Europe, and the MTV 2000 Europe Music Awards. During the two hour webcast, MTV's host chatted with award winners, performers and presenters including Bono, Darude, and members of Aqua, Moby, Moloko and The Cardigans. Yahoo! Sweden was also present at the music awards, promoting Yahoo! Chat to the awards thousands of attendees. In France, two key new properties, Yahoo! Music and Yahoo! Games were added to the Entertainment site.

In Finance, Yahoo! Germany integrated a dedicated banking centre on its site in conjunction with, amongst others, Motley Fool and Aspect Online. Users now have on-line access to their Deutsche Bank 24 savings and checking accounts, plus a variety of other features including comprehensive SMS alert services. In Italy, Yahoo! and ONBanca, the first Italian Internet bank, joined forces to offer an on-line banking service. A unique bank account, the ONClick Account, is now available to Yahoo! Italy users, offering a range of innovative features and allowing account holders to access their account on-line.

In News, the UK & Ireland added Sky News to its aggregated news service to provide breaking UK, world and show business news. In France, news features added to the site include 'People', 'Oddly Enough' and 'Video of the Day' section.

In Community and Communications, Yahoo! Denmark significantly expanded its range of services with the introduction of Yahoo! Photos, Yahoo! Briefcase, Yahoo! Invites and Yahoo! Companion.

In Sports, Yahoo! Ski and Snow was launched in Yahoo! Spain, providing up to the minute news and information on recreational and competitive skiing.

Interactive Marketing Services

During the fourth quarter, Yahoo! Europe added a number of high profile brands to its advertising portfolio including, Givenchy Parfums, Oracle, BSCH, Land Rover, Dr-online.dk, KPN, MTV Awards, Compaq, Pfizer, Sonera, Armenager, Mothercare, Liberty, Mazda, Argos, Homebase, Umbro, Yardley and Allders. In the UK & Ireland, Germany and France, a marketing alliance with Amazon was extended enabling access to local Amazon sites via graphic links which appear on every search results page generated by the Yahoo! directory.
