London, 5th April, 2000 - Yahoo! Europe, which provides commerce, communication and media services through eight local Yahoo! sites, today announced its revenue and traffic figures for the first quarter of 2000. This represents the first time Yahoo! Europe has disclosed its net revenue.
The figures are released with today's financial results for Yahoo! Inc which reported net revenues totaling $228,384,000 for the first quarter ended March 31, 2000. Yahoo! Inc's non-U.S. operations, not including Yahoo! Japan, represented 14 percent of total consolidated revenues during the first quarter.
Yahoo! Europe Q1 Highlights
- Yahoo! Europe's net revenues for the first quarter ended March 31, 2000 were $22,151,000
- Yahoo! Europe's traffic grew to more than 940 million page views during the month of March 2000 on the Yahoo! Europe network(1)
- Yahoo! Europe launched WAP services in UK & Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
The European Internet market place continues to grow at a rapid pace. In 1999, European Internet usage almost doubled from 41 million users to 81 million(2). The year 2000 is expected to witness a similar growth rate with 119 million Internet users forecast for the end of the year, included approximately 87 million(3) users in the eight European countries in which Yahoo! has a presence. The year is also expected to witness the escalation of the trend towards alternative methods of Internet access, with the widespread introduction of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) enabled mobile phones and personal digital devices. Whilst the number of mobile phone subscribers during 2000 is expected to rise by 20 percent to 159,515,000, the number of regular mobile Internet users is projected to increase from 48,000 at the end of 1999 to 5,978,000 at the end of 2000(4).

OPERATIONAL REVIEW
Distribution & Internet Access
As part of its Yahoo! Everywhere initiative, Yahoo! Europe introduced its WAP services in the UK & Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. In addition, each country launched Yahoo! Mobile, a dedicated site, informing users on how to access Yahoo! WAP services. It includes a HTML WAP browser simulator and a directory of WAP-enabled sites in each country.
Yahoo! Europe also continued to forge relationships with both leading wireless networks and leading device manufacturers across Europe. During the quarter, Yahoo! teamed up with several companies:
- Siemens - Yahoo! was appointed as official WAP content provider for Siemens. This represented Yahoo!'s first agreement with a mobile phone manufacturer in Europe and Asia. The agreement includes a co-branded advertising programme.
- Radiolinja - Yahoo! is providing WAP content for Radiolinja, a leading Finnish network operator.
- Telenor - It was announced today that Yahoo! will provide Yahoo! Messenger to users of the Telenor mobile telephony network. Telenor is the leading telecommunications provider in Norway. Yahoo! Messenger allows users to send instant messages to online friends and can be sent to anyone who is a Yahoo! registered member. This means that users will be able to exchange messages from mobile to mobile, mobile to PC, mobile to Mac, and visa versa. Both WAP-enabled phones and phones supporting SIM Tool Kits will be able to run Yahoo! Messenger on the Telenor network.
Commerce, Communication, Media
During the quarter, Yahoo! Europe enhanced its commerce, communications and media offerings. Highlights include the following:
In finance, Yahoo! UK & Ireland introduced two new personal finance sites - the Mortgage & Loan Centre and Savings Centre in conjunction with moneyeXtra.com. Both Yahoo! UK & Ireland and Yahoo! Germany added insurance quotation services with Cox Insurance and Aspect On-Line and tax centres were added to the French and German sites in conjunction with patrimoine.com and buhl.de.
Yahoo! Shopping, which launched in the UK, Germany and France during the fourth quarter 1999 continued to grow, adding several high-profile merchants including Waterstones and Thorntons in the UK, Sagem in France and Brinkmann, Thomas Crown and Rossmann in Germany, to its expanding portfolio.
Yahoo! Classifieds, continued to expand its range of products and providers, with more than 600,000 individual items on offer across the Yahoo! Europe local sites during the first quarter.
Yahoo! Greetings (electronic greetings cards) was introduced in the UK & Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain and Yahoo! Chat was added to the France, Germany, Italy and Spain sites. In addition, Yahoo! Clubs was launched on Yahoo! UK & Ireland, allowing people to create their own personal Web communities and interact with anyone who shares a similar interest.
Merchant and Advertiser Services
Yahoo! Europe continued to attract new, high-profile advertisers to its sites. New advertisers include Jaguar, Johnson Fry, BASF, Shell, Mercedes Benz, Nivea, Iberia, Heineken, Seat Pagine Gialle, Caixa Bank and Netdoktor. New e-commerce merchants include Petmad.com, handy.de, Share.com, Les Echos and Tradizioni Italiane.
During the quarter, Yahoo! also signed a pan-European sponsorship agreement with Ford to sponsor the UEFA Champions League coverage on Yahoo! Sport.
