Yahoo! Europe Announces Q2 2000 Revenue and Traffic Figures


London, July 11th 2000. Yahoo! Europe, which provides commerce, communication and media services through eight local Yahoo! sites, today announced its revenue and traffic figures for the second quarter ended June 30, 2000.

The figures are released with today?s financial results for Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO), which reported net revenues totalling $270,116,000 for the second quarter ended June 30, 2000. Yahoo! Inc.?s non-U.S. operations, not including Yahoo! Japan represented 15 percent of total consolidated revenues during the second quarter.

Yahoo! Europe?s net revenues for the second quarter ended June 30, 2000 were $28,632,000

Yahoo! Europe?s traffic grew to more than one billion page views during the month of June 2000 on the Yahoo! Europe network

27 million unique users in Western Europe visited the Yahoo! network during the month of June 2000

Yahoo! Europe saw significant progress of its Yahoo! Everywhere initiative:

  • Yahoo! mobile services added to remaining 3 local sites (Sweden, Norway, Denmark
  • Portfolio of Yahoo! mobile services expanded
  • Distribution agreements with TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile) and Virgin Mobile

OPERATIONAL REVIEW

Distribution & Internet Access

As part of its Yahoo! Everywhere initiative, which delivers Yahoo! services formatted for both fixed and wireless connections via PCs, mobile telephones, personal digital devices and digital TV?s connected to the web, Yahoo! Europe introduced a number of new services to its mobile portfolio across Europe. Key additions include the launch of Yahoo! Mobile Messenger in the UK & Ireland, which was the first instant messenger service for WAP-enabled mobile phones or PDAs available in the UK. Yahoo! Alerts, an SMS (short messaging service) that delivers stocks, weather, and horoscope information to any SMS compatible mobile phone, was also introduced in the UK. Yahoo! Europe has teamed up with Mobileway, a provider of interconnections between all SMS networks, to facilitate the distribution of Yahoo! Alerts. Core Yahoo! mobile services and dedicated Yahoo! Mobile web sites were introduced into Sweden, Norway and Denmark during the quarter, completing the European roll-out of Yahoo!?s mobile services to each local site.

Yahoo! Europe also continued to forge non-exclusive relationships with leading wireless networks and leading device manufacturers across Europe. During the quarter, Yahoo! teamed up with TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile), the largest mobile telephone services operator in Europe by client base, to provide a range of WAP content and services for its WAP gateway. Yahoo! also signed an agreement with Virgin Mobile, the world?s biggest virtual mobile operator, to prominently position Yahoo! mobile services within the Virgin WAP portal in the UK.

Commerce, Communication, Media

In News, an agreement with BBC Online, the Internet news service of the BBC, was concluded. This provides a continuous feed of top news stories from BBC News Online to Yahoo! UK & Ireland News. This represented the first time that BBC News Online's content has been supplied to an external online news provider. In each local site, the news pages were re-designed to include additional graphics, photos and video streaming.

In Entertainment, an integrated TV Guide was introduced in the UK & Ireland, France, Germany and Italy. The TV Guide was also added to mobile services available to Yahoo! Mobile users in the UK & Ireland and Germany. Moderated chat sessions were introduced in Europe, including Nike football chats with seven leading European premier league players. The Entertainment site was enhanced by the incorporation of additional rich media content, including video streaming of concerts and artist interviews, in conjunction with Doro and Newsnet in Germany.

In Sports, Yahoo! Europe introduced comprehensive and integrated coverage of Euro 2000, which included a six-language live audio feed from Eurosport, a three language stock-exchange based fantasy soccer game in conjunction with German-based Neopoly, and the integration of content products and community services such as chat, auctions, shopping and clubs. Yahoo! Europe sport also benefited from acquiring a worldwide licence for the full scorecard of all cricket matches involving test playing nation from Cricinfo.com.

In Commerce, Yahoo! Germany entered into a joint venture with Quelle AG, Europe?s largest mail order company, to create TOOJOO.AG, which aims to become the leading German gift specialist on the web.

In Yahoo! Auctions, Yahoo! Germany teamed up with Deutsche Post World Net to offer users of its auction site a new and unique shipping and escrow payment service, called WEBTRANSFER.

In Community and Communications, Yahoo! Clubs was rolled out into France, Italy, Spain and Germany, Yahoo! Photos into UK & Ireland, Spain, Germany, France and Sweden, and Yahoo! Briefcase into the UK & Ireland, Spain and Germany.

Merchant and Advertiser Services

Yahoo! Europe continued to expand its portfolio of high-profile advertisers. New advertisers during the quarter included Lancome, UBS AG, Yac, Daimler Chrysler, Dressmart.com, AGFA, Johnson & Johnson, Vitago, One-2-One, Confetti, Banca Popolare Bergamo, Heineken, Banca Intesa, C.D. Flash and Air France. New e-commerce merchants during the quarter included Handy.de, Libro, Mytoys.de, Haburi.com and 123 pret.com. During the quarter Yahoo! Europe introduced a number of innovative advertising campaigns for clients, including Levis and Domino?s Pizza, further expanding the unique and interactive solutions Yahoo! provides for advertisers seeking to secure a measurable Internet presence.
